Turkish Foreign Minister Joins Cyprus Meeting
(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to participate in an unofficial gathering regarding the Cyprus issue, taking place on Wednesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The event will bring together representatives from both sides of the divided island as well as the guarantor states.
As indicated by sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Ankara anticipates that the gathering will yield initiatives to nurture a spirit of collaboration between the two communities on the island.
The ultimate goal is to contribute to the establishment of amicable and neighborly ties between the two Cypriot entities.
Alongside Fidan, the meeting will feature a number of key participants: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar, head of the Greek Cypriot administration Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, and UK Minister of State for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories Stephen Doughty.
This marks another instance of Fidan’s involvement in informal discussions on Cyprus, having also been present at a similar meeting organized in Geneva this past March.
These kinds of informal sessions are not meant to resume prior peace negotiations, nor are they considered the launch of a fresh round of talks.
During the Geneva meeting, initiated by Guterres, attention was placed on areas of practical collaboration—such as the operation of crossing points, demining efforts, and environmental cooperation.
Although some headway was made, certain aspects remained unresolved due to the "stance of the Greek Cypriot side."
